The problems faced by students to complete the entrance test for Institutes Indian Management, also known common admission test (CAT) in 2009 brought the issue of online examinations in focus. Among the recent disagreements surrounding this case particular, the success of earlier attempts by other institutions have been neglected. That technology is the way forward in education as well, is not disputed, WAS yet difficult for skeptics to look beyond CAT-2009 that the problems addressed. We set out to examine and record the views of stakeholders in higher education segment, composed of concerned authorities and students.
first ever comprehensive research report to see India's future examinations, ValueNotes EDGE-report entitled 'Examinations and the role of technology: Emerging Directions', tries to look at the issues associated with traditional paper-pencil tests and the potential benefits of leverage technology to provide such tests. The report provides insights as awareness, perception, alertness and experience of key stakeholders in Indian education more than technological solutions for the assessment, first exams online. The study was based on a comprehensive, national survey of more than 75 key decision makers, including vice chancellors, the controller examination to university chancellors, academic experts, etc.
"It 'was encouraging to note that managers decisions are not only aware of the advantages of using technology for assessments, but have also indicated their intention to be positive for the implementation assessment online, "says Arun Nigavekar, former chairman, UGC and State MeritTrac Education Advisory Panel.
The study included a survey of perceptions students – 400 students across several cities Tier I, II and III – to see how students felt about online exams. The survey indicated that students were also positively inclined towards the exams online, despite concerns being raised by skeptics on their behalf. Interestingly, students presumably less qualified Technology Tier III cities were more positive on such tests.
"Despite the recent issues in testing online universities continue to believe in the positive impact of technology, although they are more concerned about the implementation. Whereas there is still a lot of bases to be done, the penetration online exams will increase by 5 -10% over the next two years. However, given the greater degree of experimentation and innovation in the area of assessment, we believe there will be a significant traction over the next 3-5 years, "feels Arun Jethmalani, Managing Director, ValueNotes.
Some interesting points from the survey of university employees are:

52% of all VC / Registrar / COES respondents indicated that they were interested in the concept of using technology in exams, 15% were being tested and 15% had already begun.

77% of all VC / Registrar / COES states that were considering the introduction tests online and 68% of these respondents indicated that they would have done this in the next 6-36 months.

Decision makers largely considers that technology solutions to mitigate some of the immense challenges we faced, and the level of awareness on the potential of the technology was quite high.

The three priorities in the management of exam results are faster, more transparency, and the authentication of students / higher security. Respondents stated that they have the greatest impact their decision to go online.

Infrastructure, suitability of format and test equating between more than the amount of testing has emerged as the three main challenges perceived by almost 60% of respondents to them.

Some respondents also concerned about students from rural areas who may not have access to computers at all, and may have difficulties to adopt this.
On students' perceptions:

The vast majority of students (95%) were aware of online assessments, and this was consistent also in level III city.

The majority of students (69%) believes that universities that conduct exams online were more technically advanced – especially students from Tier III cities.

The majority of students considered the online process to be more precise and safe than traditional methods.

Process transparency and convenience are the main perceived benefits, even if the students were concerned about the difficulty of using online tests, and lack of support from authorities for examination.
